I have been going to this place for the last 20 years with my family. All I remember about it back then was my dad tricking me into biting into the giant raw jalapenos that come with each entree. Now though, I can tell you that the food at this restaurant is AMAZING and AUTHENTIC. The service could stand to be a little bit better, but that can usually be worked around by ordering a pitcher of your drink so the server never really needs to come back. If you want the best authentic Mexican in the Chicagoland area (and I live downtown) go to Cocula.

I guess this must not be a real mexican restaurant they must google ways to serve a Burrito Suizo they authentic way not taco bell style... we pay for what we ask .... Not happy at all....

If I could I would give zero stars. Staff very rude owner even worse. If you order a side of guacamole they don't tell you that it's $7.99! You only notice this when you review the bill. When you ask them about it all they tell you is that's the price. A side should cost $1.00-2.00. The same situation happened to another customer while I was there. While the other customer was leaving I asked if they had a similar experience. They also did. The owner saw me talking to the other customer about the guacamole issue and walked over while I was eating and started to yell at me. He said that I should not talk to his customers. I tried to explain that we both had similar concerns and that he should do something to fix that. He didn't care very much. Then one of the rude waitress said he's the boss and he can say what he wants. I replied your wrong, I'm the boss because I pay for the food, service, and even her salary. If customers aren't happy then eventually there will be no way for your "boss" to pay your salary and keep the place open. I left quickly and advise anyone NOT TO EVER EAT HERE.

I have never had more horrible service in my entire life, place was near empty and had to wait 20 minutes to even get waited on, then we asked for lemonade and got some frozen drink which my husband and I could not drink, it was horrible and I ordered the fahita plate and it was too spicy, when I told the manager, she said" Oh well, pay your bill. so I basically had water and rice and paid for an entire meal that I could not even eat. When I called the manager the next day, all he did was apologize, never again.

I have always loved this place until recently. As usual when you see a new menu in a restaurant you know the prices have gone up. Well in this case the prices sky rocketed. Not only that the quality of food went down. I've always loved the rice and beans. They changed the rice which is extremely bland and the beans tasted watered down. I had a steak Torta that hardly had any steak on it. I sure hope I caught them on a few bad days. But it's going to be a very long time before I go back.

The salsa here is the best in town! The food is always good, and consistent; I haven't had a bad experience here yet.

I've been here way too many times always giving this place the benefit of the doubt but the service always disappoints. If I'm paying 100+ I'm doing it for the food and the service. They always take forever and never come back to check on you nor bring you the check, you have to ask and when you do, there's not one waitress that feels unbothered by it. There's never any music in the background unless there's that dj there. How awkward I can hear everyone's conversations. I don't think I'm expecting too much from a Mexican restaurant in calumet city with Chicago prices.

From the out side this place has very Nice Curb appeal, The inside is filed with Mexican Heritage. The Food is Authentic Mexican but the booths are Poorly arrange, they are to far from the table which make it a Lil uncomfortable while trying to Njoy your Dinner the Circus is a little flat but the Food is Delicias.

One of my fave next places to eat at. Having a father that is a chef and can really throw down in the kitchen, it's hard for me to really enjoy a nice Mexican meal out. But they have the best carne asada dinner and their liquados are awesome! The service is fast and the waitress' are fairly nice, for the most part!

Fresh chips and salsa all day. Their steak tacos are tender and they are very generous with their portions. The restaurant has a nice ambiance, waitresses are nice mostly. The always have specials going. Not really crowded which adds to the flow of service. Delicious food

Staff is friendly and towel service is a big plus. There is free 2 hour parking in the nearby heated garage if you get your ticket validated. So far, it has been a really good experience but I hope they maintain the facility as time passes.

there were 10 of us in a party this sunday evening in which 6 were kids and 4 were adults. the service was quite slow and not on point. we even asked a question to 1 lay & she didnt even speak english. i dont have a problem with her not speaking english, but dont have her working on the floor of the restaurant were the customers can talk to her since she cant respond. i ordered a skirt steak in red sauce and it was good but the beans nor rice were good. they just didnt have a good flavor to them like ive had at other mexican restaurants. there are a bunch of restaurants in this area so i would not recommend this one.

This place is awful! Slow service, non friendly staff. I didn't like how my fish was cooked....and was told that I could order something else...but would be charged for the fish....which is one of the highest priced items. They don't even have fresh jalepeno Chiles. ....I ordered a grilled jalapeño and got jarred chiles. My husband's milanese torts was terrible. We had 12 people in our party. ...took an hour and half to get our food. I decided not to order a replacement for the fish since the waitress took 15 minutes after I sent the fish back to get my new order. We were told that we still had to pay for my fish that I took two bites of. We will never come back here again. You shouldn't either!

Let's say that you're driving to Indiana because you need to stockpile some cheap cigs. Or gas. Or fireworks. Or if you're me, all 3. Because let's face it - driving around smoking cigs and using them to light the wick on your roman candle and holding it out your passenger window is good times. Right, so you're driving along and you get a craving for mexican, but not like tacos or burritos - a meal. Make a pit stop here in Cal City. You'll know you're here when you see the super bright multi colored building. I'll give you a couple of options. If you like raw oysters, start with those. I personally think it's like eating mocos (yep, that's spanish for boogers) but some people dig 'em. As an entree, I really like the guisado de puerco. Served with rice, beans, choice of tortillas and a salad. It's a type of pork stew in a red sauce. The meat is super tender and the sauce isn't too spicy. My favorite thing here is the seafood soup. Man is this stuff delicious. Its packed with shrimp, octopus, oysters (not raw thankyouverymuch) and fish served up in a spicy broth. To die for! So here's where the law of averages comes into play. Basic mexican fare just isn't up to par. Neither is the service. Balance that out with the few things that they do amazingly well and you end up with a place that is A-OK in my book.

Where to begin. Ah lets start w/ the colorful painted walls on the outside. Seriously orange, green, blue, yellow??? With those bright colors you can see the place from a mile away. lol. The food is just ok in my opinion. Nothing out of the ordinary. Prices are decent. Service is just ok. Idk what else to say about this place. Its just blah.

Very good and consistent. Large portions of yummy food...I craved this place when I was pregnant, specifically this location. Service is always great and really I can't think of anything they need to change. Solid.

I have been to most of the local Mexican restaurants in my area but Cocula by far has the best and tastiest selection of soups. First off the restaurant is typically decorated as a traditional Mexican restaurant including the stuffed Bull's head on the wall. Which seems to be always looking at you when you eat. The menu itself is your typical Mexican fare BUT two things stand out, the soups and the parrilla plate. Parrilla is basically a small hibachi type grill brought out to you with a variety of cooked and cooking meats. The grill is basically used to keep the meats warm and it includes grilled onions and bell peppers. They offer a Parrilla plate for two people for around 29$ but its well worth the money and they give you big helpings. It also comes with rice and beans and your choice of tortillas. The real star though is the soups. I have tried all of them and the sopa de mariscos is the best I have ever had outside of Mexico. The soup is packed with tons of seafood shrimp, fish, clam, oysters, crab, octopus, and calamari. Its a perfect blend of veggies, seafood and spiciness. You tummy will go home happy after eating this soup. I also recommend the sopa de res and sopa de pollo both are excellent.

Consistently good food, consistently good service. They aren't trying to reinvent the wheel here. No sir. It's good ole Mexican food in large portions with a bright atmosphere. Family friendly, this is not a quiet little cantina. The decor is bright and the music is loud. Conversations and laughter are everywhere. The drinks are strong. Bring your friends here. Bring your significant other here for margaritas. I would probably NOT do a first date here or an intimate evening, but this place is great otherwise. Overall, a fun place with a great atmosphere and yummy comfort food. What's not to love?

If your looking for a good sit down mexican restaurant, this is a good place to go. The food was good, they had a good variety of foods and drinks. I had the beef taco, beef tostada and cheese enchilada. The beans and rice were good and the guacamole was very good. The prices were good, the one thing I really didn't like was no free refills on drinks. The service was ok, it wasn't bad, the servers were nice. The inside of the restaurant wasn't fancy or very welcoming. They had tv's up you can watch no matter where you were sitting. We had small kids with and some of the stuff on tv was not something I wanted them to see. This is a place I would go to again, but not something I'm crazy about.

I have been a fan of Cocula's for years. I love their tortas & their horchata. But I prefer the other locations over this one. Their service is slow & the staff is not friendly. The ladies that work there are too busy watching tv or talking to each other to come check on us. I was wondering if obtained new owners in the past couple of years, because the service has changed greatly.

I went here on Cinco de Mayo because I just wanted some light, authentic Mexican food. The atmosphere was cozy and very busy. The staff seemed very friendly. I ordered the tacos-chicken and steak. All meals automatically come with chips and dip. The salsa was very tasty. The tacos- especially the steak tacos were phenomenal. Very delicious. As a pre-birthday celebration, my family & I ordered strawberry margaritas!! They were good- the liquor in them seemed fairly strong. Overall, this being my second time there, this is a good place, with good prices! Check it out!

There food was okay. It wasn't the best Mexican food I have ever had but it was just, okay. Their horchata had way too much cinnamon in it. It was hard to drink!

I am very picky when it comes to Mexican food, it has to be authentic and I was very impressed with this place..They have the best steak tacos ever, the meat was seasoned to perfection & the tostadas were piled high with everything, yeah it gets a little messy when eating it but it was so good I didn't care...I'll definitely be back!

One of the best Mexican food places you will ever go to! It's the real deal when it comes to authentic Mexican food. All the ingredients are fresh even the seafood dishes, which impressed me! It's consistent across the board as far as service and food quality! HIGHLY recommend this place! Very family friendly, you can hear music, laughter, sometimes even a mariachi band! The drinks are well worth the money and strong so if you want a really good margarita this is the place!

Great food and pretty authentic. I enjoy the food every time. Like others have said, you cannot go wrong with the tacos, bistec tampiquena and my absolute positive favorite, the huachinango Veracruzana (Red snapper covered in a tomato based sauce). The decor could use some sprucing up and every now and then I have to ask that they re-clean the table, but you can't go wrong with the food. I thoroughly enjoy going there for take out.

Great food!! One time I found a super soft chip in my salsa like it was reused salsa.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
